For this go around, Mac and I have decided on a partial DITY move to relocate all of our stuff. DITY is basically the do-it-yourself moving option. We are moving the majority of our everyday stuff in our cars: clothes, TVs, computers, books, and the like. The movers are scheduled to come and pack up all of the big stuff that we’re putting in storage: furniture, kitchen wares, and the other items we really won’t need while he’s gone.
Clearly, we should just do this instead. |
We won’t get the full financial benefit of a full DITY move (you can potentially make a lot of money depending on how you do it), but we will have the perk of professional movers doing the heavy lifting. I just moved up to 12 pound dumbbells, no way I’m carrying a dresser down a flight of stairs. We’re starting the purge, as well. We’ve already decided to trim the fat and get rid of items we realistically don’t need to keep (and pay to keep in a storage unit).
Who else has done a DITY move? Any advice?

We have only done a partial DITY, full dity moves scare me haha.

Purging is the best thing you can do while moving, for sure!

The only times I’ve ever moved was from 40 miles away and everything I had could fit in my vehicle. B/c the big stuff I’d leave at my parents.

Okay, so clearly I’ve missed a lot. Your husband is deploying?

We did a full DITY move, and my advice is to just keep tabs of all your receipts. I kept a small folder in my purse with everything organized by type. Also enlisting friends and family on both side to help with heavy lifting is super beneficial.
