Since the line for Ruby Falls was way too long, Mac and I headed over to Rock City. Rock City is a park with natural rock formations, waterfalls, and an overlook with a view of seven states. We got there pretty soon after they opened and waited in a short line to buy tickets. When you’re ready to go inside, you have the choice of a few different paths. The paths are mostly paved or stone, but they can be quite narrow or slippery. Most of the paths also overlap, so you can easily detour from one attraction to the next. Rock City is very family friendly. The Fairyland Caverns feature carved scenes from a variety of fairy tales that you can look at while you walk through the cavern. They also have a gnome garden.
Address and Location
You’ll find Rock City at 1400 Patten Road in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. It’s about a 20 minute drive from downtown Chattanooga. Parking is available across and down the street from the main ticket booth.
Cost
Tickets run $24.95 for adults and $13.95 for kids ages 3 – 12. They also offer annual passes and combination tickets if you want to see other sites in the area.
What to Do
We wanted to go to the Seven States overlook, but we picked the wrong path and wound up in the gnome garden. We got on the right path and headed out there. I really enjoyed the overlook. I’ve actually lived in four of the seven states you can see (Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia). The morning was hazy, so I don’t think we could see as far away as Kentucky and Virginia.
After checking out the scenic view, we walked around to the Lovers’ Leap waterfall then meandered back to the Fairyland Caverns. We also stopped by the gift store on the way out to grab a Christmas ornament (which we collect). You can buy lots of gifts featuring the famous “See Rock City” barns that advertised Rock City when it first opened.
