Apologies for the hiatus in my Euro-trip updates. I was staying in a hotel for work training, and my computer decided to stop recognizing the hotel internet. But here’s a life update before we get back to Europe!
Back in June, I was scrolling through the MWR guide for Fort Gordon. I noticed an education section that highlighted the different colleges and universities that provide services through the on-post education center. As I was still unemployed with a master’s degree in higher ed, I checked out each university website to see if they had jobs in the area. Several did, so I applied for those positions and waited.
The day our stuff was delivered, I got the “let’s chat about this position” phone call, and I called back the next day. We set up a phone interview for the beginning of July, then I had an in-person interview in mid-July. The next week, I was told that I would be offered a job once my references were checked.
The official offer came through on July 26. As is life, the cats had a vet appointment that day, so I got to take them to their favorite place in the world during a monsoon. Mac called me as I was leaving and told me to come home ASAP because he was in terrible pain. He thought he was having a back spasm, and we headed over to the ER after I got home (perks of on-post living: it took about 5 minutes). After some drugs which he declared left him feeling “mellow,” our fellow Hokie ER doctor diagnosed a kidney stone and gave Mac some drugs to ease the passing process. He passed it the next day and is A-Okay.
So what exactly is this job? My official position is a Military Education Coordinator. Essentially, my role will boil down to two main tasks: the first is scheduling classes (instructors, rooms, enrolling students, etc.) and the second is advising students. I’m really excited to use my degree and to work with military students. I spent the past two weeks training at the main campus in Maryland, and my first day on the job is today!
What’s been going with y’all lately?
