Colorado is one of those states that has a lot of unique things to do. One of the most unique is the Calhan Paint Mines, a natural geological formation carved by erosion sit about 45 minutes east of Colorado Springs. The Paint Mines are an El Paso County park and are free. The rocks have really cool formations and colors, and Pikes Peak looms along the horizon. Years of erosion formed the caverns, hoodoos, and hills and exposed brilliant oranges, yellows, and reds from the rock formations.
The hiking trails are pretty easy, and the views are fantastic. I would recommend wearing sturdy shoes because the trails are dirt and are quite uneven. You can easily hike the whole park in a few hours. As with any hike in Colorado, pack plenty of water and a camera. Rock climbing is strictly off-limits, and make sure you stay on the trails. The site is protected because the ecosystem is very fragile. If you’re in the area, be sure to check out the Paint Mines!
Other Colorado hikes: Garden of the Gods – Perkins Central Garden Trail | Red Rocks | Florissant Fossil Beds | Seven Falls | Rocky Mountain National Park – Dream Lake
