90 seconds. One of the Pure Barre warm-ups involves a 90 second forearm plank. It’s a torturous way to start your morning, and the only part of Pure Barre that I dread. Until yesterday, I was only able to plank for 30-40 seconds. Yesterday, I did it. The whole plank. 90 whole seconds (though I’m pretty sure those last 30 seconds were more like 20. Just keeping it honest).

I’ve been going to Pure Barre for about six weeks. A studio closer to my house finally opened, so I no longer have to trek 25 miles round trip to Fairfax. So far, I have seen pretty good results. In the six weeks or so, I’ve lost over 15 pounds. I had a minor plateau, and I fell off the bandwagon of going regularly for about two weeks. I’m still loving the workouts, and I feel great after finishing class.
My Pure Barre advice:
1. Try it. The classes are fun, challenging, and totally worth the muscle-shaking effort.
2. Buy the sticky socks. They really do help with some positions, especially the plank.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. A lot of the moves (or lingo describing the moves) can seem confusing. Go early or stay late to get some help.
4. Find a class time that works for you and stick with it. You will develop a routine much more quickly if you go to the same class (or classes) every week.
5. Go to class as often as you can. I see the best results when I go regularly (it doesn’t have to be every day. A few classes a week is enough).
6. Buy the unlimited pass option. Unless you go to one class a week, it’s more cost effective to buy the month of unlimited classes.
If you’ve tried Pure Barre, what advice would you add?

I’ve always wanted to try one of these classes but having a baby prevents me. Maybe one day!
