Chances are if you’re reading this post, you’re planning a move to Fort Leavenworth. When we found out Mac was headed to CGSC, we started researching our options for housing. If you remember, I moved out here in April because I was offered a job. Mac followed in June. Ultimately, we decided to live off-post at Fort Leavenworth.
Last spring, I called the Fort Leavenworth housing office and explained our situation. I asked if they would consider offering us housing early since Mac had orders and I was moving in April. They said no. So we decided to rent a house in town. Our lease began on May 1, and our landlord is allowing to extend until June when we leave.
All About CGSC housing
The big thing to know at Fort Leavenworth: CGSC housing is separate from the regular housing. Yes, the neighborhoods and houses are the same, but the process for assigning housing is done separately. As with all military housing, you can’t get on the list without official orders. You’ll be placed on the housing request list once you have those in hand. Requests for housing are processed at the end of May. From there, you are assigned housing as it becomes available. The big take away is that if you’re not on the same timeline as CGSC, you may not get housing on post.
Your off-post options
If you go down the rental path, you’ll notice that a lot of houses rent for almost exactly what your BAH will be ($1500-$1600 a month). I would recommend looking south of Spruce and west of 7th if you plan to live in town. You’ll also find a wide selection of apartments. Leavenworth does have a university, so you get a mix of apartments for college students or more expensive options. A lot of people also choose to live in the wider area. Lansing and Basehor are towns just south of Leavenworth in Kansas. People also live in Platte City or on the north side of Kansas City in Missouri. If you choose to live in Missouri, keep in mind that your main route to post is over a two-lane bridge across the Missouri River.

I’m not planning to move there, but I still really enjoyed this post. Very informative and helpful for those who are heading the base!
