To cherish friendships
Given that I now work in Greek Life as a job, I am often asked why I do what I do and why I love my job. Many people’s opinions about Greek life are shaped by the bad stories you see on the news: racist or inappropriate chants or songs, hazing deaths of new members, and so on, and they wonder why people would want to work in such a field as a career. These stories sicken me, and I am always disappointed to see those Greek members who get so little out of their membership.
In the past five days, I was able to reconnect with two of my sisters who were visiting Colorado. One was here visiting her in-laws, and the other (super crazy) one completed the Pikes Peak Ascent, a half-marathon that runs up Barr Trail and climbs almost 8000 feet in elevation over the course (like I said, crazy). I hadn’t seen either of them in about five years: we graduated and moved to completely different parts of the country.
But over dinner, we chatted about our lives then and now, old friends, and new jobs. That connection I felt with them when we met through Alpha Gam was instant, and it returned just as quickly. Honestly, it didn’t even feel like five years had gone by. I’m thankful that Alpha Gam allowed me to foster such powerful friendships. It sounds warm, fuzzy, and cheesier than Velveeta, but those friendships, that connection are why I joined a sorority. And if I could only share one of the many amazing reasons to go Greek, this would be it. The Alpha Gamma Delta Purpose sums it up perfectly: To cherish friendships with but a chosen few and to study the perfecting of those friendships.
