Sovereign Ladies: Sex, Sacrifice, and Power – The Six Reigning Queens of England – Maureen Waller

Sovereign Ladies by Maureen Waller is a composite biography about the six queens regnant of England. It analyzes each woman’s life and her journey to the throne. Overall, I enjoyed it. While it was a bit lengthy, Waller covers the six queens in equal detail and provides a comprehensive summary of each woman. This is also a great first read for anyone interested in learning more about England’s reigning queens.

Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker: A Novel – Jennifer Chiaverini

I recently finished Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker by Jennifer Chiaverini. It’s a fictional telling of the extraordinary life of Elizabeth Keckley. Keckley purchased her freedom and worked as a personal dressmaker to the elite of Washington’s political society. She also becomes the dressmaker for and a close friend to Mary Todd Lincoln. I really enjoyed this book. While I normally don’t read historical fiction, this read as more a biography with fictional depictions of major events added. It’s a fairly quick read, and both book club members and history buffs will enjoy it.
