I’ve been plowing through my Netflix queue and finally watching some “must-see” movies. A few months back, “Saving Private Ryan” found its way to my mailbox, and I was excited to watch it. While it is a fantastic movie, it’s not the ideal choice for the wife of a deployed soldier. Obviously, it’s a war movie, and *spoilers* most of the characters die. In depressing, soul crushing, curse you Steven Spielberg sort of ways. Because of this, it found its way onto my “don’t watch while Mac is gone” list. Here are a few more.
Restrepo – This amazing documentary follows a unit entrenched in the contentious Korengal Valley of Afghanistan. It is a very politically neutral film that tries to bring a face to the modern war zone. I caught part of it on National Geographic back in 2011 and rewatched the whole thing on Netflix a few days later. I think every American should watch it to understand just what the war in Afghanistan has been all about. Several of my friends were stationed in the Korengal, as well. A word to the wise: don’t watch a documentary about a violent area in Afghanistan while your man is in a similarly violent area of Afghanistan.
Zero Dark Thirty, Lone Survivor, and The Hurt Locker. Same thing here. Movies that are about the war your husband is fighting in are not the movies you want to watch while he’s fighting.
What other movies would y’all add?

I should have never watched Taking Chance while Kyle was deployed. It was horrible.

I watched a documentary about Wounded Warriors while Tom was deployed. Hot fricken mess. Restrepo is a fantastic movie that a lot of people have never heard of, but yes agreed that during deployment time is not the best time.
