Now that we’ve figured out where you’re working and what you can wear to work, you need to decide what to buy. Let’s assume you work a “normal” job: 40 hours a week (ish) spread across 5 days. On average, you’ll need 20 outfits a month. Obviously, you won’t need 20 complete outfits without overlap, but it’s a good number to think about when shopping.
1. The Power Pieces
This is power suit territory. Every man, woman, and child (well, maybe not the kids) should invest in one killer suit. It doesn’t need to be expensive, but it needs to match and should be tailored. For women, I suggest one jacket with matching skirt AND trousers. You don’t have to wear them as a suit everyday; you just create a lot of options. Three suit pieces can create six outfits. I cannot stress the importance of buying all your suiting pieces at the same store during the same season. The last thing you need is a suit jacket that’s a slightly different black than your skirt.
2. The layers
If you’re wearing a suit, you will most likely need a shirt. Women have a bit of flexibility here: both button downs and blouses are great for work. Look for fit (no gapping across the boobs and long enough), appropriateness (not too tight or low cut), and style. You have to wear it, so you need to like it. Don’t buy a shirt in a color you don’t like just because you think you need a color in that shirt.
3. The undergarments
Please, for the love of all things pure and holy, don’t wear a sports bra when going shopping for work clothes. Get fitted for a good bra, and invest in some decent underwear. If need be, buy a body shaper (get one that fits, your ribs will thank you). Don’t forget camisoles or pantyhose. I loves camis and wear one everyday I’m at work. They help with temperature control (extra layer for warmth, can catch sweat) and provide some more coverage (like when your only clean bra is hot pink and your shirt is not). Pantyhose make your legs look more toned, and you can wear cute tights during colder months.
4. The outfit finishers
The finishers are what you wear to pull a whole look together. These include shoes, jewelry, and other accessories. Find a nice basic pair of comfortable black shoes (heels or flats). A watch is also helpful. Where you work can also help you decide what you want here.
