I have to admit that I was excited to hear that Carrie Underwood was involved in a new production of “The Sound of Music.” I know a lot of people were not happy and were claiming that Carrie was trying to replace Julie Andrews. Just an FYI, this production was not a remake of the movie, it was a live staging of the actual Rodgers and Hammerstein musical (along the lines of the original Cinderella and Peter Pan productions).
People even decided that a traditional dirndl was too inappropriate for this. |
I watched it live last night, and I loved it. The casting was pretty spot on; Stephen Moyer (Bill from “True Blood”) was probably the weakest link. Elsa, Max, and the kids were all very good. Audra McDonald (from “Private Practice”), who plays Mother Superior, was spectacular and should never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever do any non-singing role ever again. It just isn’t fair to humanity for her to not sing. Watch this and be amazed. Do you know how hard it is to sing in that kind of cold?
Who else watched? What did you think?

I watched the first half – and enjoyed it! I was wondering why the songs were placed in different times, I’ve never seen the stage version, so I was confused at first!

I wasn’t able to watch it yet but I am glad they made it. I love the movie and Julie Andrews but also love a new way to watch the story.

I loved it too! I new Audra McDonald looked familiar, but I couldn’t place her! Which was your favorite scene?

I didn’t see it. Mostly because I’m not a Sound of Music fan at all. I heard reviews on the radio this morning and there was a lot of criticism on Carrie’s acting. I also heard there were many different accents going on by the actors and it wasn’t cohesive.

I watched it and really liked it! I was in a youth production of it back in middle school (I was a postulate, party guest, and festival performer), so it was definitely a fun blast to the past. And while I do love Carrie Underwood, and that her singing was great, she just didn’t seem to be a very good actor to me.
