I experimented with this recipe for Oktoberfest sandwiches the first time a few years ago as a way to use up leftover ham. It reminds me a lot of German cuisine because it has pork and apples. When I first tested this recipe, I used croissants. I finally found pretzel rolls, so I tried those out. The pretzel rolls are perfect. They’re chewy, crunchy, and so flavorful. If you can’t find pretzel rolls, feel free to replace them with croissants. The thinly sliced apples add another layer of crunch.
My secret ingredient in these Oktoberfest sandwiches has to be the mustard. I love grainy, spicy, brown, honey, dijon; basically any mustard that isn’t yellow. You can use any mustard that you like or have on hand. I grabbed a bottle of a grainy Grey Poupon that had a nice sharpness to it. It definitely added another layer of delicious flavor to the sandwiches and paired well with the other ingredients. You can also swap out another German / Swiss style cheese. Ermenthaler or Muenster would be great in place of Swiss.
