Travel season made a dent in my reading time. Between early mornings, late nights, and hours of driving, I wasn’t getting a lot of reading done. But here’s what I did read!
The Siege of Fort William Henry: A Year on the Northeastern Frontier – Ben Hughes
If you like “The Last of the Mohicans,” then this is a book for you. It examines the lead up to and eventual siege of Fort William Henry during the French and Indian War (so the real story of both the James Fenimore Cooper story and the movie). Sadly, you won’t see Daniel Day Lewis, but it is an incredibly interesting read. I would definitely recommend this book.
England’s Queens: From Boudica to Elizabeth of York and England’s Queens: From Catherine of Aragon to Elizabeth II – Elizabeth Norton
These two books are basically two parts of one bigger book. Each looks at the life and times of every single queen in what we call England from Boudica in Roman times to QEII. Some entries are more detailed than others, but you get a lot of good information for about a thousand years of queenship. They’re easy to read and pair well together.
The Scratch of a Pen: 1763 and the Transformation of North America – Colin Galloway
Another book about the French and Indian War. This book looks at the long-reaching impacts of the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ended the French and Indian War. Instead of just focusing on that treaty as what caused the American Revolution, it really delves into the bigger geopolitical puzzle of the American colonies, the British Empire, the French, and the Spanish. A solid read for those interested in early American history.
