Prague is only a two or so hour drive from Grafenwoehr, so we drove there Thursday morning, spent all day Friday, and drove back Saturday morning. I had never been there before and didn’t know what to expect. Prague is an amazing city, and I would definitely recommend visiting if you find yourself in that part of Europe. Here’s how we saw all the main sites of Prague in one day.
Take the train to Prague Castle
Prague Castle dominates the city skyline and sits at the top of Castle Hill in the Hradcany neighborhood. I would highly recommend taking the light rail to the top of that hill (trains 22 and 23 both run to the Castle. Train 23 is nowhere near as crowded.). The stop is across the street from the castle gates. You go through a security line and then walk into the castle. We wound up not taking a castle tour because we had our two-year-old nephew with us. We opted to check out St. Vitus Cathedral instead (you can walk around part of it for free or pay for a tour). As a fan of Renaissance cathedrals, I really enjoyed it. Be sure to walk around the castle complex for the sweeping views of the city.
Walk down the hill and across the Charles Bridge
Castle Hill is a really steep hill. The hill slowly makes its way through a street full of shops, churches, and restaurants to try. The Charles Bridge is one of the other main touristy locations in Prague. It spans the Vltava River and has tons of street art vendors on it. If you want a print of Prague, the Castle, or the river, you will have tons of selection here.
Visit Old Town and the Astronomical Clock
Old Town Prague is a charming neighborhood that makes up a large portion of the original Prague. It’s full of shops and museums ranging from the wacky to the what were you thinking? (they have a History of Sex museum if you’re interested). If you are visiting around Christmas and Easter, you can check out the street markets. The Astronomical Clock sits in Old Town Square, and you can watch the clock strike at the hour.
Climb Old Town Hall to take in the views
The Astronomical Clock sits in the Old Town Hall, a medieval tower. If you want to climb the tower, buy tickets online to skip the {probably massive} line. You can either take a sloping ramp or take the elevator, depending on your physical level. At the top, you walk one-way around the tower and get truly stunning views of Prague. It’s worth it.
