70
70 years ago today, the greatest naval invasion in the history of the world occurred as the Allies stormed the beaches of Normandy.
A memorial: each outline represents a KIA. |
The sheer number of paratroopers, soldiers, sailors, and support that were involved is mind-boggling. Having lived at Fort Bragg (home of the 82nd) and having watched airborne jumps, D-Day must have been a sight to behold. It sounds ridiculous, but I finally watched “Saving Private Ryan.” The opening scene as the Americans arrive at the beaches is shocking, inspiring, and humbling.
We can never thank the greatest generation for what they sacrificed in order to win World War II.
