Say Yes to the Dress, Part I

Personally, I think that too much pressure is put on brides to have the “perfect” dress. You have to be model thin, toned, tan, and look like a million dollars. While I wanted a nice dress, I wan’t overly concerned with it.

The first time I went shopping was with my mom last June. The parents came to visit, and my daddy encouraged my mama and me to do as much wedding stuff as possible. We made our way to the David’s Bridal here in town and didn’t have the best experience. In the shop’s defense, we went on a Saturday afternoon and hadn’t made an appointment. The place was hopping. The lady at the check-in desk told us we would have to wait 30 or so minutes. Mama and I hit the racks and found a few styles I liked.

I tried on only three dresses. Why? I went to DB to try on one dress. This creation by the lovely Mrs Vera Wang. I spotted it after the Royal Wedding and had to have it. The David’s main site said that all stores had it, but Fayetteville’s store didn’t get it until about three weeks after I went. This took a bit of wind out of my dress-shopping sales.

A consultant came to get us about 40 minutes after arriving. I pointed out the dresses I wanted to try on, she pulled them, and we went to a room. Now, I watch Say Yes to the Dress wayyyy too much, and I was quite surprised by the tiny rooms at David’s. For those of you who haven’t been, the room is so small that you, a large ballgown, and a consultant makes for a tight squeeze.

And forgive my lack of photos of what I actually tried on. I neglected to bring my camera, so my mom snapped pics on my cell phone. Which I no longer have (whoo, iPhone upgrade). But these are ones I tried on.

I’ll be honest with y’all. Trying on dresses really hit my self-confidence. I gained a bunch of weight in the year or so after finishing college. But that’s a story for another day. When I stepped out, all I saw was the extra weight. I caught a glimpse of myself from behind. Yikes. When did my ass get so big?

In a moment of self-loathing, I bought a dress. It was $100 on final sale and fit. If all else failed, I would at least have a dress that fit and didn’t look terrible. If you want it, let me know!
